Meet Center Shot Archers Inc., America’s first Black and Latino Competitive Archery Team

Brooklyn’s Center Shot Archers was established in 2008 by pioneering African American archer and coach, Larry Brown.  After serving as the first Black coach for Columbia University’s women’s archery team, Coach Brown decided to dedicate himself to bringing the sport to New York’s inner-city youth.

Coach Brown has been teaching archery in school-based programs since 2004. When some of his students began to exhibit superior skills, he realized they needed a platform to further develop their talent and move to the sport’s next level.  With that realization, Center Shot Archers was born. While focused on supporting African American and Latino youth who historically did not have access to this sport and/or quality coaching, NO ARCHER HAS EVER OR WILL EVER be turned away from our program or classes based on race, culture, ethnicity or gender.   Consequently, our club is multiethnic, multiracial, mixed gender and multicultural.

By applying Coach Brown’s core principles of persistence, patience, focus and physical training, Center Shot Archers are distinguishing themselves on the American archery circuit by consistently winning and placing at state, regional and national tournaments.  All of our students simply love the sport and enjoy shooting.  Many have Olympic Dreams and are working with grit and determination to achieve them.  Our program is designed to accommodate the recreational archer and those archers with competitive achievement goals.

As Coach Brown has noted:  “Never before has there been a group of African American and Latino youth participating — and winning — at this level of competition in the sport of archery.”

Coach Brown, I met you and your team in Hamilton,Ohio at Joyce Park model airplane flying field. I would like to wish you and your team good luck in the event and please continue the good work. It would be awesome for these young men to pave the way for other minorities in the sport of archery at the Olympic level. I truly believe they are capable!!!! It’s great to see our youth involved in such a positive activity. “True leaders choose paths that are often not traveled” Keep up the good work!!!

    • Good day Mr. Fitzgerald. Hope all is well. Our team will be back in Ohio for the Nationals next week. Do you still fly the model airplanes? We would love to catch up. Email back to let us know. No pressure, just thought the young folks (and older) would enjoy it. Be well. Roberta
